Early Years at the Mead School
Our Early Years department is made up of Kindergarten, Pre-Reception and Reception Infants.
The aim of our Early Years teachers is to create an environment in which your child will feel safe, loved and aware that he or she is part of a warm and welcoming community which consists of the whole school.
The prime areas of personal and social development, communication and language, and physical development are our focus in Kindergarten & Pre-Reception.
Within the carefully prepared environment there is structure, security and freedom for your child.
Structure is found in our responsive planning of activities to support speaking and listening, early numeracy, and exploring the world around them. A learning journal is kept for every child, containing photographs and formative assessments.
Security comes from the awareness that parents and teachers work together in a supportive and loving relationship. At the end of the session there is always an opportunity to talk to your child’s teacher, there are regular reports and parent consultations throughout the year.
Freedom comes in the time set aside for child initiated activities, during which teachers observe and get to know each individual child. The children’s chosen activities are illustrated on an information board placed in the collection area each day, and their interests form the basis for the teachers’ planning.
Our activities and topics follow the natural rhythm of the seasons, and the celebrations and festivals of our families.
In Reception Infants we build on the rich experiences of play and exploration which your child has experienced in Kindergarten.
More time is now given to teacher-led activities in literacy, numeracy and knowledge of the world. Music, Drama, French and PE are taught by specialist teachers and supported by the class teacher.
Exploration and experimentation takes place inside and out, whatever the weather! Our outdoor environment provides opportunities for running, climbing, pedalling, swinging, digging and building! Your child can choose to be in a busy and bustling group, or to play quietly, or to just look and watch.
Everyone is different, and everyone is welcome! Please come and see our children at work and play. In the Early Years Department at The Mead School, the words ‘work’ and ‘play’ are one and the same.
Kindergarten & Pre-Reception
At The Mead School, we within Kindergarten & Pre-Reception believe that the foundation years are of primary importance and a child’s first experiences of school life make an indelible impression.
In the Kindergarten & Pre-Reception, security, self confidence, sociability and success are our aims for every child. We foster social skills and prepare a loving but disciplined environment in which learning is fun. Our Kindergarten & Pre-Reception provides many opportunities for creative self-expression during which we continually reinforce the development of language skills and literacy, including fluency and phonic awareness through topic work, art and music.
We develop an understanding of mathematical concepts through practical experience and experimentation. During these sessions the children enjoy an introduction to Science and Technology. French conversation, PE, swimming, judo and ballet are specialist taught and included in our structured timetable. All these activities and experiences combine to prepare the child for a happy and smooth transition into the Infant School.
Kindergarten starts at age three and is taught in two different groups according to age. Sessions increase according to age. All snacks and lunches are included where applicable. Prospective pupils of Kindergarten are warmly invited in the term before they begin to familiarise themselves with staff, areas and routines.
